BMC INTERNATIONAL CIMBALOM COMPETITION 2019

The International Cimbalom Competition organized by Budapest Music Center will take place between 25 and 31 August, 2019 in Budapest, Hungary.

The two categories of the competition:

Classical–Contemporary Category
Open Category (folk music, jazz, world music etc.)

You can apply in only one category.

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

The competition is open to cimbalom players of all nationalities who were born on or after 1 January 1974.

Application deadline: 21 April, 2019

All of the following documents must be enclosed with the application form:

  • brief curriculum vitae
  • ID or passport copy
  • a recent, high-quality portrait photo
  • the copy of the receipt about the transfer of the entry fee
  • video recording (max. 8 minutes)

The application also serves as the preliminary of the competition, for which the applicants upload a max. 8-minute long video recording to the website of the competition.

Classical–Contemporary Category

Obligatory work:
a freely chosen movement from Johann Sebastian Bach’s violin sonatas, violin partitas or cello suites
Chosen work:
any music piece, arrangement, or instrumental work featuring a cimbalom solo

Open Category

Obligatory work:
a Hungarian folk song arrangement chosen from this list
Chosen work:
cimbalom solo piece or cimbalom solo with accompanimenta

Candidates will be notified of their participation in the semi-final by 3rd May, 2019. The qualified contestants have to send the scores of their works performed in the semi-final and final to the e-mail address cimbalom@bmc.hu till 24th May, 2019.
The entry fee will not be refunded to contestants who withdraw from the competition.

The semi-final and final of the competition take place in the Budapest Music Center between 25-31 August, 2019.

Practice time will be available, and before the semi-final and final contestants have the opportunity of a rehearsal at the venue of the competition as well.

All rounds will be open to the public.

The order of appearance will be decided by ballot at the opening of the competition. This order will be valid throughout the competition.

Budapest Music Center provides professional piano accompanists in the semi-final and chamber orchestra accompaniment in the final to the competitors, free of charge.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation at own expense. Participants are asked to arrange their accommodation themselves.

JURY

The jury evaluates the performances in the semi-final and final with a score of points ranging from 1 to 25. The jury handles the contestant’s scores in a highly confidential manner and announces the names of the contestants selected for the next round in the order decided by the original ballot.

The jury plans to select 15 contestants for the semi-final and 3 contestants for the final in each category.

The jury reserves the right to decide whether or not to award the prizes, or to change the division of the available prizes. The jury’s decisions are final and are not open to any appeal or discussion.
